Here’s Jake, founder of Now Carpets, showing you how to measure your room for new carpet quickly and accurately. In this short video, he shares expert tips to get the right measurements first time, saving you money. All you need is a pen, paper and a tape measure. Watch the video, or follow our step-by-step-guide step-by-step carpet measuring guide below.

Step 1

Grab your kit

Tape measure, pencil, paper, and a phone calculator. Clear the floor so you can measure wall to wall without obstacles.

Step 2

Sketch the room

Draw a quick plan. Mark doors, alcoves, bay windows, and radiators. You’ll measure the longest length and widest width from this sketch.

Step 3

Measure the longest length

Measure wall to wall at the longest point. Include door thresholds and any recesses. Write this down as Length (L).

Step 4

Measure the widest width

Measure across the room at several points and take the largest number. Include alcoves and wardrobes if the carpet will run behind them. Write this as Width (W).

Step 5

Work out what to order

Choose the roll width that covers W (most carpets are 4 m or 5 m wide). Your order length = L On our website, you can tick the option to add 10% wastage. This is recommended and makes life much easier for your carpet fitter.

Step 8
